2011 LPYC Saturday Fun Race Series

The goal of this series is to provide a fun way to get sailors out on the water to enjoy sailing their boats. Although it is called a race, emphasis is on fun and participation and not on strict racing. As discussed below, boat ratings will be adjusted from race to race to compensate for each individual boat and captain. The goal of the race is to have a staggered start so that each boat crosses the finish line at about the same time.

Race Course

The series will be set up with an approximate four mile course so that all boats should be able to finish in two hours or less in normal wind conditions. The starting line will be an imaginary line between the white covered boathouse on the north shore and the red roof boat house on the south shore near the entrance to Saline Bay at approximately 32° 08.313’ N, 95° 26.962’ W. Here are photos of the two boat houses that comprise the start/finish line:

We will sail approximately two miles south toward Eagles Bluff where an orange turning mark will be anchored at approximately 32° 06.433’ N, 95° 26.750 W for those with gps. For others it will be south of the Eagles Bluff boat houses and immediately south of the eastern shore copper roof boat house (photo below) near the east shore of the lake. Round the turning mark to port and sail back up to the starting line to finish the race.

The Rules

1) NO LUFFING is allowed. Luffing shall be defined as changing course to windward after another has approached within two boat lengths from any direction.

2) A boat passing to windward or leeward must MAINTAIN AT LEAST TWO BOAT LENGTHS TO EITHER SIDE until no overlap exists.

3) Use of Autopilots is allowed.

4) HAVE FUN!

Start Times and PHRF Ratings

PHRF ratings will be used for the initial start times for this Series. These will be adjusted with each race to reflect the performance of each individual boat and captain. The goal is to RATE EACH BOAT SO THAT EVERYONE CROSSES THE FINISH LINE AT THE SAME TIME. We get no pleasure in assigning ratings that boats cannot sail to, and we want everyone off of the course at the same time. If we give someone too big of an adjustment, and they out sail everyone in the subsequent race, then we will adjust back some for the next race. This is a fun, casual race, designed to get everyone sailing around the mark together, and just having a good time.

THE PROPOSED INITIAL START TIMES AND RATINGS FOR ALL OF THE LPYC BOATS are attached in the excel spreadsheet are updated and posted on this web page - http://lpycboating.com/2011RaceStandings.aspx

The ratings and start times will be adjusted after each race and will be posted on the web site, so please check it before each race.

THERE ARE FIVE RACES IN THE SERIES, each scheduled to start near 2:00 PM (actual individual start times are listed on the spreadsheet as discussed above), on:

April 30

May 14

June 18

September 17

October 22

NOTE WE WILL NOT BE CANCELLING OR RESCHEDULING RACES based on weather or attendance. If the weather looks really bad, you will have to decide on your own whether to participate or not. I will send out a reminder via email the week before each scheduled race and please reply to all to let everyone know who plans to be there.

Points/Scoring/Series Awards

If six boats race, then the first place boat will be awarded six points, the second place boat five points, etc. However, the minimum points awarded to a first place boat will be three points, minimum points to second place boat is two points, minimum points to a third place boat is one point. MINIMUM SCORES WILL ALWAYS BE BASED ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT THREE BOATS COMPETE. This way if one boat shows up and races around the course, and everyone else chooses to stay home, that boat will earn three points. PARTICIPATION = POINTS!

EMAIL JIM STEVENSON jim(dot)p(dot)stevenson@gmail.com YOUR EXACT START AND FINISH TIMES or call him at (903) 941-0931 if you don’t make it to the after race raft up. Your start time should be at or close to the time listed on the spreadsheet. Start times will be established from race to race as discussed above. We need these to determine the finish order, AND TO CALCULATE NEW RATINGS FOR THE NEXT RACE. So it’s pretty important!

VHF Monitoring

We (LPYC) will be monitoring VHF channel 72 during the race in the event there are problems or questions.

After The Race

We hope to raft up after the race and enjoy beverages and snacks that we each bring. This assumes that we can successfully get the ratings established so that we finish somewhat close to the same time, which proved to be quite a challenge in the 2010 series.

Prizes

We will arrange for a hand painted wine glass for first and second place series winners. Plans are to award the wine glass trophies at the LPYC annual meeting in January. Below is a photo of the first place trophy for the 2010 series.
